TIMESHARE EXCHANGE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a timeshare exchange?

A timeshare exchange is ideal for owners whose travel plans are to travel the world using their ownership to trade.  This allows you to easily use your week at another location without having to invest in a second timeshare. You may want a change of pace from the home resort one year. Timeshare exchange companies fulfill a very real need for owners with varying preferences.

How do I make an exchange?

It’s very simple. begin by calling either Interval  International or RCI whomever is affiliated with your Resort and that you have a membership with. You do not necessarily have to vacation in the same fixed week that you own but of course that is your option.  Just let the exchange company know, when, where and how many people will be traveling and they will check on it’s availability.

Why Should You Consider an Exchange?

A timeshare exchange can be ideal for owners whose travel plans have changed or who need a change of pace. This allows you to easily use your week at another location without having to invest in a second timeshare. It's also a better alternative to renting out your week, which could make you lose out on your vacation time altogether. Timeshare exchange companies fulfill a very real need for owners with varying preferences.

What do I have to do?

To take advantage of the exchange company’s services, you'll need to own a timeshare and then sign up  for an account with either of the exchange companies your resort is associate with or either or/both if your resort is associate with both exchanges. If your resort is a dual affiliated resort you only need to belong to one.

In able to exchange you will need to have a week of yours deposited or banked with the exchange company. From here you will be able to access all of the exchange listings that are available once you've registered and begun your search. You'll initially need to search by requested location(s), time of travel, and number of people traveling in your party.

A common misconception is that you have to exchange the week you own for the same week, not true! It is possible to select a different resort week from the one you've relinquished. The available choices to you  in this case will coincide with your ownership season you have deposited or lower  season.

How Do the Deposits Work?

Some resorts participate in what's known as an early deposit program. This allows you to make your deposit 18 months to 2 years ahead of your check-in date. In most cases, your deposit will need to be made a year in advance. Deposit extensions can be requested when circumstances come up that make travel inconvenient for you. That allows you to take care of whatever your obligations are without having to miss out on your vacation.

is rapidly catching up! With nearly 2000 resorts in over 75 countries around the world, II operates

much like RCI, offering convenient and customer-friendly exchange services for clients worldwide.

Do RCI and II own the resorts you stay at?

No. RCI and II are merely member/owner service networks that offer exchange services to

timeshare owners at resorts with which they have an affiliation agreement.  In other words, the

management company owns the resort/timeshare property, and agrees to contract with one company or the other to give owners at that resort the flexibility and convenience of exchanging for other resorts.

Is there a membership fee for RCI and II?

Yes. The annual fee for Interval International and RCI is approximately $89. They also offer multi-year subscriptions which may save you money compared to the annual rate.

What are the benefits of each company?

The benefits of RCI and II are basically the same. Both provide an annual listing of all affiliated

resorts in their networks.  Both offer "getaway" packages at extremely generous discounts to provide members with extra vacations while retaining their owned timeshare week. Both services publish a periodic update magazine. And both RCI and II provide members with travel-related services such as air-travel reservations, car rentals, etc.

What does spacebank mean?

A Spacebank Deposit is the term RCI gives to their members when the member has deposited their timeshare unit into RCIs spacebank pool. Simply, the member has given their week up

for someone else to trade into. The pool consists of all the members spacebanked weeks. You can bank your week when you know your units check-in dates. This can be done online, over the phone and your resort will generally do this for you if you own a floating time. You should have paid your resort dues before spacebanking.

What is red, white, and blue time?

Red time (season) is the high season of the resort.

White time is the mid-season.

Blue time is the slow season.

The week you are choosing and the week you are trading for have certain check-in and check-out dates. These dates will fall within the prearranged red, white and blue schedule determined by RCI.

What is red, yellow, and green time?

Red time (season) is the high season of the resort.

Yellow time is the mid-season.

Green time is the slow season.

The week you are choosing and the week you are trading for have certain check-in and check-out dates. These dates will fall within the prearranged red, yellow and green schedule determined by Interval International.

What does Gold Crown, Silver Crown, and Standard mean?

Gold Crown and Silver Crown are RCI trademarks. These reflect awards RCI has given to these resorts for maintaining different requirements. Resorts without these symbols are considered standard. Gold Crown deposits may filter out some resorts RCI may feel are not an equal trade. Do not judge all your vacation destinations by these symbols as older resorts without these awards may be the location you want.

What does Premier, Select and Premier Boutique Resorts mean?

Premier, Select and Premier Boutique Resorts are Interval International (II) trademarks. These reflect awards II has given to these resorts for maintaining different requirements. Resorts without these symbols are considered standard. Premier Resort deposits may filter out some resorts II may feel are not an equal trade. Do not judge all your vacation destinations by these symbols as older resorts without these awards may be the location you want.

What exactly is a “Getaway” program?

RCI and II offer “Getaway” programs that allows members to enjoy special VERY low rates at

affiliated timeshare resorts.  These weeks are usually unused weeks at resorts – often in off-peak

season – that require no exchange to reserve.  Getaways can now be scheduled for as little as two or three nights, perfect for weekend travelers.  This offers members the opportunity to look at other resorts without losing their week at the resort they own.

What is the Flexchange Program?

Flexchange allows you to book an exchange on much shorter notice. Exchanges available through this program are listed on Interval International's website. You can also call the company to find out what's available. These flexible deposits are also available for exchanges that require deposits two weeks to two months prior to check-in.

Are Guest Certificates Available?

You'll be pleased to know that II does offer guest certificates. These allow family members or friends the privilege of being able to use your timeshare. These can easily be purchased at the time of an exchange request or confirmation. The cost of a guest certificate through RCI and Interval International is about $49.

How Does the Getaway Program Work?

Getaways are offered to Interval International Gold members. These offer vacations at different locations without having to exchange your timeshare. The accommodations are the same as those you'd enjoy at your own timeshare. Many vacationers use such getaways as a regular option every year.

When I make an exchange, does someone else have to use my time?

Not at all. All weeks that are offered by members are deposited into the "available space" bank and

requests are made against these weeks. Exchanges are fulfilled based on availability, but some weeks may not be used for exchanges every year.

May I rent my timeshare week out?

Once you become the legal owner of a timeshare, you may rent it out if you wish. However, RCI,

and II, don't assist in rentals.

May I rent out a week I have received in exchange?

Not at all! This is expressly forbidden.  You may only lease a timeshare for which YOU hold the

deed or certificate.  If you re-lease a week you have received through an exchange to a third

party, and RCI or II find out, you will be banned from future exchanges.

What is the difference between exchange seasons?

In timesharing, demand is everything.  The difference in season will be determined for each resort

based on the popularity of that particular resort at any time of year. A most sought-after week like February in Utah is rated as high season because Utah in February is a popular destination

for Skiiers.  Virginia Beach in January would be an example of a  low season weeks. No rocket science here!

Is it possible to trade one high season week for two or more low season weeks?

No, it isn't and you should not base your timeshare week purchase on this criteria.. There may

be some occasional exceptions to this rule but they are very rare. In general, you can depend on one week at your home resort being exchanged for one other week at an exchange resort  even if you're exchanging your week in Orlando for a week in Oskotch, Kansas.

How many resort locations can I request?

In general, you will be able to request as many resorts in you're interested in. Being flexible

in resort choice and in destination will improve your chances of making a successful exchange.

When do I pay the exchange fee?

All fees are payable immediately when you make your request. If you are requesting a guest

certificate or adding other options they are due at this time, also.

How long will it take to confirm my exchange?

Many exchanges are due within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. If your desired destination is not

immediately available, RCI/II will have a computerized search continue to look for exchanges at your requested resorts. All incoming deposits will be checked against your request up until fourteen days before your planned departure date or until confirmed.

Do I pay my maintenance fees at the resort I'm exchanging to?

No. All maintenance fees are paid directly to the resort you own and not to the resort you are

trading to.  The maintenance fees are set by the resort, not the exchange program.

How does an internal exchange at my home resort work?

An internal exchange allows you to exchange the week you own for a different week at the same

resort. If you have a summer week and wish to go at another time of the year the resort may perform an internal exchange for you based upon availability of the rooms. The resort may or may not charge a fee for this service, and will have its own rules for exchange.

What is an internal exchange from RCI/II?

This just means that, instead of using your home resort to exchange to a different week at the same

resort, you are using RCI or II to facilitate the exchange. There is a fee for this service just like any

other exchange. Priority will be given to any owner wishing to exchange back at their home resort.
